Fifty dead men walking

I watched this movie on a plane just because I had been living in Northern Ireland for a year and I wanted to listen to the accent (I have a thing for accents) but I was not expecting to like it. In fact I was expecting to watch five minutes of it, satisfy my accent cravings and switch to something else but that didn’t happen.

The movie is about a man who infiltrates into the IRA but is actually working for the British police. He will try to save lives by risking his and his family’s only to find disappointment in both sides of the conflict. It is not an easy movie. There is a lot of violence and tension and you know that nothing good can come out of it. The worse part is that it is based on a true story so you can not just dismiss it all as some moviemaker’s imagination.

I obviously knew about the IRA but I had never really thought about what the troubles had been like. The movie certainly gives you a clear picture. It was also how I discovered Jim Sturgess who does a lovely job in it. Not a movie to take lightly because it will you up but definitely worth watching, specially if you like thrillers.

    • I lived in Belfast so, technically, I lived in the UK but yes. It is very nice , specially if you like the countryside but not a place were I could stay for long, I’m too much of a city-girl. The pubs and the people are great, though 🙂

  1. Fifty Dead Men Walking book (by Martin McGartland) is much better than movie of same name.

    The film was a very poor effort, the book (Fifty Dead Men Walking) is much better. Martin McGartland, the subject, would not be involved with the film (which is fiction). He told press at that time that ‘The film is as near to the truth as earth is to pluto, it is 99% fiction.’ ( )
    I downloaded the book, which is a true story, from amazon:

    { For more than four years, Martin McGartland lived the astonishing life of a secret agent. To the IRA, he was a trusted Intelligence Office and an integral member of an active service unit. To the British Government however, he was known only as Agent Carol. Martin McGartland is credited by British Intelligence with saving the lives of at least 50 people. Every time he tipped off the authorities, he risked detection and yet, heroically and fearlessly, he continued to pass on life-saving information. Finally, his cover was blown. Martin was taken from Sinn Fein headquarters in Belfast to an IRA safehouse for questioning and almost certain execution. Though guarded by three armed IRA men, in a desperate bid for freedom, he dived from a third floor window. This breathtaking story is now a major film starring Sir Ben Kingsley and Jim Sturgess.}

    Martin McGartland was a British agent for Security Service (MI5) and he stopped many terrorist (IRA) bombings and shootings. MI5, Northumbria Police and the CPS exposed him during a flawed court case and set him up to be murdered.

  2. I remember when Martin McGartland was shot and Northumbria Police lied to the press by claiming the shooting was connected to drugs, they did this to coverup and protect the IRA (and themselves). Martin McGartland sued as a result and was paid £500,000.00 in damages and legal costs there are lots of videos on net of Martin McGartland and the Northumbria Police coverup of his attempted murder

    • It seems that there is a lot more to this story than what appeared in the movie, but then again, this usually happens with movies, they just can’t include everything.

Let me know what you think!
