Translations, make up and birthdays

Today has been an exciting day because I got my first paid translation offer so I’m really happy. I still don’t now if they will choose to hire me because I graduated recently and, of course, I don’t have all the experience they would like me to have. But still, this could be a first step.  Of course, it is coming at the worst possible time because next week I have to take some exams as well as give my students exams so it is a busy time but this is what usually happens.

I also got the last few things I ordered online and I realized that my make up shopping might have gotten a little out of control so I promised myself to be a good girl and not buy any more until.. well for the next year or so.

Lastly, this week is packed with birthdays (4 actually) which means a lot of dinners and that I’m not having much time to post.

A while back a friend of mine told me that Disney’s movie Tangled was originally called Rapunzel, like the Grimm brothers tale, but they decided to change it because it was too girlie and it wouldn’t appeal to boys. They apparently came to this conclusion after the not-so-good results of The Princess and the Frog. And I just wonder, are these people so focused on marketing and strategies and all that that they are not capable of seeing the bigger picture? The Princess and the Frog was boring and a mediocre movie. Tangled, on the other hand, if fun and entertaining. I don’t think using the original title would have made much of a difference. Not that Tangled is not a good title, it just breaks with the Disney tradition.

Whatever the title, there is no doubt that Tangled is a great movie. Despite being imprisoned in a tower, Rapunzel is not the damsel in distress one would expect her to be. She is smart, strong and dying to see the outside world. Unlike the traditional tale, a prince will not come to her rescue but she will receive the visit of a scaped thief who will change her life forever and, finally, take her out to the real world.

I’m not an expert in these things, but I think the design and the graphics are amazing. The plot is slightly different from the original but for the better. Disney was able to create a more up-to-date version of the classic while making as laugh and shed a couple of tears (or may be that is just me). Flynn is a nice character and the witch is, well, evil, basically what they are expected to be. It is with Rapunzel that they were able to give this story a whole new angle and what made it so enjoyable. Tangled made me have faith in Disney again and I can’t wait to see the new one, Brave, which promises to be a great one too.

The Kreative Blogger Award

Ever since I got Internet on my phone I check wordpress every time I get a chance (and by that I mean way more than I should, of course) so whenever I have a new visit, a new like or even, on lucky days, a comment I feel incredibly happy. Therefore you can imagine how thrilled I am to have been nominated for an award. It is the Kreative Blogger Award and I was nominated by littlemissobsessivesanatomy whom I would like to thank from here. You totally made my day! And to everybody reading this, do go check her blog which is lovely and a great read

As for the award, the rules are the following:

  • Thank the blogger who gave me the award and provide a link.
  • List 7 interesting things about myself that my readers might find interesting.
  • Nominate 7 other bloggers, provide links and let them know.

So, on to the 7 things about me that you might find intersting:

1) If you ask me what my favorite book is I will say One Hundred Years of Solitude but, really, it’s White Oleander.

2) I have a recurrent dream of going to my high school in my pajamas.

3) I’m a language freak. I could spend hours talking about language origins, word etymologies, declinations… So don’t ever ask me about words unless you want a one hour speech on it.

4)I’m terrified of having my blood pressure taken because I feel like the cuff is going to inflate too much and my vessels will somehow explode. I know this makes no sense, I know it’s irrational and yet every time I go to the doctor and she tells me she’s going to check my pressure I shudder.

5)  I love getting letters on the mail.

6) I only sing out loud in the car because it is the only place where I can be sure nobody can hear me.

7) I’ve always wanted to get my nose pierced but I’m afraid it won’t look good on me (not to mention the needle and the pain).

Well, I’m not sure you’ll find these interesting but I had never mentioned them in the blog, so there you go. Now, on to the bloggers (hope nobody will mind if a couple of them are not in English but they really deserve it):

1) Caffeinated and Random

2) Planet Edinburgh

3) Domestic Diva, M.D.

4) Kissthemuse

5) A cualquier otro lugar

6) The Naked Envelope

7) Des petits bruits

I think all of these blogs are amazing, each in their own way, so check them out if you have the chance.

Blog in Spanish

If you are reading this then you probably don’t care but I’m a translator so bear with me. I’m in the process of translating the blog into Spanish. As soon as I translate everything I will add all the links, but for now, if you want to check it out you can do it here.

Jolie Box: Not Jolie at all

As I told you in a previous post I subscribed to Glamourum, which is now owned by Jolie Box, and so today arrived my first box. It looked pretty and promising but it inside it was a huge disappointment.

Let’s start with the worst product, the Farmatint Light Bath that came in a wonderful dark brown (3N) color. Now, taking into account that my hair is dark brown you can imagine how thrilled I was with this product. Not to mention that I never die my hair.

Next was the anti-wrinkle Natural Honey lotion designed for women from 40 to 55 years old. However, I’m 24, so I don’t know how they reached the conclusion that I could benefit in some way from this lotion.

On third place, were the self-tanning towelettes from Comodynes. This I wouldn’t have minded too much if the box hadn’t been so bad. I guess I’ll use them when we are a little closer to summer or if the weather gets better. I’m not a fan of self, tanning though and, for what I have seen in other blogs, this is the third time they are including these in the boxes so I am not very satisfied.

Another thing that came were the Bioyoga bath salts. They seem to be pretty relaxing and it is nice to have them. My only complaint is that it is only a sample good for just one bath and I don’t pay for samples, those you can get for free.

Finally, the two things that I did like. The blusher from Gisela. It is a bit too pink for my taste but I guess I will use it (unlike some of the other things in this box). It also comes with a discount for their online store which I know I will never use but at least is targeted to me. And, last but not least, the lip gloss from D’Orleac. Now, this one is gorgeous. It is a shiny brownish color that looks really nice and it lasts for a very long time (or at least more than half the day which is how long I tried it).

After seeing all of this, all I can think of is “Why on Earth did I fill in a questionnaire?”. They have certainly not looked at it, nor at my age for that matter. I was not expecting to like everything but giving me two products I can’ even use is plain stupid and a waste of my money. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and see what they send next month but it’d better be good because otherwise I’ll switch to Glossybox.

Avon’s face pearls

This morning I was putting my make-up as usual when some of my face pearls from Avon fell to the floor (as usual too) and it made me think of the love-hate relationship I have with this product. On the one hand, I really love it. The color is great and it looks very natural. But, on the other hand, this stupid pearls get stuck in my brush and end up falling or going down the drain. I should probably switch to some other kind of compact powder but the color is just so nice. I guess I’ll have to learn to live with its flaws, like in  any other relationship. However if you don’t mind this or have a more appropriate brush than I do, I really recommend it.
